Accelerated Reader

|
Eustace ISD
has a library on each of
its four campuses. Books may be checked out for a period of seven
days for students in grades 1-8; students in grades 9-12 may check out
books for three weeks. Kindergarten students read their library
books in their classroom. Books may be rechecked as many times as
necessary. Fines for late books are five cents per school day.
|
Diane
Chambers is the librarian at Eustace High
School. The high school has 12,284
books. Last year 713 new books were added to the collection. The high school
has over 1,000 audio-visual materials and 86 class sets for use by
classroom teachers. There are eight computers in the library
for student use and subscriptions to three online databases (Gale, TexShare, and World Book online) for student research that may also
be accessed from home. |

Heather Caronna
is the librarian at Eustace Middle School. The middle school
has 8,155 books, adding 456 books last year. In addition, the
library has a collection of books on tape to assist in and enrich
the reading process for students who enjoy listening as they read
along. As part of their Reading class requirements, Eustace Middle
School students participate in the Accelerated Reading program.
Students with a minimum of 100 AR points are rewarded in May with a
field trip. Students may also use their AR points in the AR store
in the library. At the middle school, we are emphasizing research
and writing skills using both written and electronic sources. The
library has seven computers which the students use for testing,
research, and other activities. Middle school students have access
to World Book online at school and at home. We believe that being
able to search out and understand information is an important life
skill which, along with reading skills, will be of value throughout
our students’ lives. |

Becky Smith is the library aide at Eustace Intermediate School.
The Intermediate
School has approximately 8,000 books, adding about 400 in the past
year. Third , fourth, and fifth grade students are involved in
several reading programs, including the Accelerated Reading Program,
the Six Flags Read to Succeed, and the Bluebonnet Books of Texas.
For the Bluebonnet Book Program, students read at least five of the
twenty nominated books and are then eligible to go to the Bluebonnet
website in January and vote for their favorite book, along with
thousands of other students across the state.
Twice during the school year the Library hosts the Scholastic Book |
|
Fair, where students, teachers and parents can purchase favorite
books.
The students at the Intermediate School share a common goal to earn
at least 100 AR points during the school year to enable them to
attend the end of the year field trip in May. Students also shop at
the “AR Store” in December and in May, using accumulated points to
buy various prizes. Also in May, the students can use earned points
to throw balls and try to dunk teachers in the Dunking Booth.
Students at the Intermediate School have access to EBSCO, an
extensive online reference database at school and at home through
the district website.

Debbie
McConathy is the library aide at Eustace Primary School.
The primary school has 6,644 books, adding 432 books last year.
To promote reading, the primary school hosts Family Reading Nights
throughout the school year for each grade level. Kindergarten,
first, and second grades also participate in Book-It!, Read to
Succeed, and Accelerated Reading programs. Grade level goals
are set for AR points; students who reach this goal |
|
are rewarded by attending the Play Day in May. The highlight
of the school year is the annual Kid Depot trip. AR points are
tabulated to see who qualifies as a Top Dog; Top Dog students must
earn a minimum of 100 AR points. Prizes are awarded throughout the
year as the students accumulate AR points. The primary library also
has the ARK Club (Accelerated Reading Kids’ Club) which begins in
October and allows students to come in before and after school to
take AR tests. Students at the primary school have access to
World Book online which includes World Book for Kids. |
